Implicit in almost every word of
Scripture is the value of life.
It is fair to say that all that
God wishes to do for us comes under the heading of enhanced life.
The message of hope that we hear
so often in the Old Testament prophets – as in Isaiah today – always points to
a better life for God’s people.
So much of what Jesus does in the
gospels is focused on curing and healing – on preserving and enhancing life.
As in today’s gospel, Jesus even
tells us that he comes to give us eternal life.
Much of our society’s dedication
to health and fitness comes from this same concern for life.
We Catholics and all Christians
share our society’s concern for life.
But, we are more realistic and we
have a fuller vision.
We realize that no matter how
many decades of life we have on this earth, this life is limited.
We believe that there is an
eternal dimension to life.
We believe that God is the source
of life, our support and companion throughout our life on this earth, and our
goal and destiny beyond this life.
We believe that eternal life is
living with God and living God’s life.
We believe that our human and
earthly life will then be fulfilled in resurrected life.
And we believe that the way to
that life is to value life right now, and that this means not just my own life,
but human life wherever it is found.
